On my recent trip to Chicago my friend showed me an article she edited for her school paper at Loyola... it happened to be about the now completed Morse Theatre we all visited in March.

After visiting I must say it has come a long way since we were walking around its dirt floor. The place is incredible, very slick and happenin'. Next time anyone is in Chicago I would recommend stopping by to check it out.

Detroit Walking Tour

The Wayne State Urban Planning Student Organization (WSSUP) has invited all Eastern Michigan urban planning students to its annual Holiday Potluck on Thursday, December 18th.

The potluck begins at 7:00 PM at the historic St. Albertus Church Rectory at 4231 St. Aubin in Detroit.

There will be a 50/50 raffle with prizes. Previous raffle items have included gift cards, books, tours, and "adult beverages."

Due to space limitations, only one guest per student is allowed.

The Wayne State planners are great people with a great perspective. Come on out to make new friends, network, and strengthen the important relationship between our two programs!

All you need to submit is a 50-word abstract of what you would like to present. Presenting at the Conference--being held here at EMU--is a really great resume builder.

Plant Some Trees With EMU GREEN and PLACE

Meet with students from GREEN--the environmental club at EMU--and PLACE this Saturday, November 15, to plant some trees in Detroit.

We will be meeting at the Student Center at 8:00 AM and carpooling to Delores Bennett Park at 444 Smith St., to plant 65 street trees on Chandler between Oakland and Woodward. Planting will be done by the Greening of Detroit in partnership with the City of Detroit's Next Initiative and North End Block Club Association. They need 100 volunteers, so we hope you come and help out!

If it's more convenient, you can simply meet us at 444 Smith St. at 9 AM.

Also, we thought it would be cool to have a "Wear your Planning T-shirt" Day next Tuesday, Nov. 11. We need to let those freshmen and sophomores see them before they register for Winter classes. The ULI Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition is a graduate-level annual competition that is intended to provide an interdisciplinary learning experience for real estate and design students in the United States and Canada. Self-formed student teams are asked to provide an urban design and a financial feasibility strategy for a large-scale real life site that ULI has identified somewhere in the United States. Through the formation of multidisciplinary teams, the program encourages cooperation and teamwork among future real estate professionals and the many allied professions, such as architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, historic preservation, engineering, real estate development, finance, psychology, law, and others.

Call for Presentations

EMU is hosting the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP) Student Conference at the Student Center on Friday, February 6th, 2009. We are seeking brief presentations from students and young professionals of no more than 25 minutes.

One purpose of the Student Conference is to give students an opportunity to present work done for a class or an internship to people, both fellow students and professionals, from around the state. Having done a professional presentation looks great on a resume, and provides good practice doing something any planner will have to do many times over the course of a career!

The deadline for proposal submissions is Thursday, November 6th. Proposals need be no more than 50 words in length.

Space for presenters is limited, and once all submissions are in the best proposals will be selected by a committee of students and professionals.

As the host school, it would look wonderful to have a good turnout of students and young professionals from EMU doing presentations. If you're unsure about what to present, or a bit nervous, talk to your professors: they're really excited to help you.

PLACE takes the Kiosk by storm!

Field Trip to Cherry Hill Village and McKenna Associates!

We hope you can join us for this great opportunity on Friday, November 7th!

We will do a walking tour of the Cherry Hill Village in Canton lead by Canton Twp's head planner Jeff Goulet. We shall grab some lunch afterward and then finish the trip in Northville taking a tour of McKenna and Associates head quarters and go there for a tour and a discussion with some private practice planners.

I can take up to 4 people in my car.

We will be leaving EMU at 9:30 AM and should be back by 3:30 PM.

We can meet at EMU and head out from there if that'll be easier for everyone.

Let me know so I can make the final arrangements. We'll talk about it more exclusively on Oct. 23's meeting.

Meet Wayne State Planning Students

The Wayne State planning department student association (WSSUP) is having their Fall kick-off meeting this Thursday. This is a good opportunity to meet your fellow planning students at another school and hear about what's going on at Wayne State. Students from PLACE and WSSUP had a mixer earlier this year at Traffic Jam in Detroit, and we had a great time. Hopefully we can continue the tradition of networking between our two student organizations.

Give it a Rest: People at Play in American Prints and Drawings,
1895–1945

This exhibition of approximately 100 works on paper serves as a corollary and thematic complement to Life's Pleasures: The Ashcan Artists' Brush with Leisure, 1895-1925. It is drawn almost entirely from the DIA’s collection and is dominated by the prints of John Sloan, George Bellows, Glenn O. Coleman, and Martin Lewis. Their images, which feature people at the circus, the beach, boxing matches, in city parks, on rooftops, reading, walking, dancing, or just relaxing, form a rich reflection of casual times in daily life. Grouped around these scenes of play and leisure are individual images by other artists such as Childe Hassam and Guy Pène du Bois. The early era is represented by several colorful lithographs created for popular magazines by Edward Penfield and William Carqueville and the range of the exhibition is expanded to include works made by artists during the late 1930s who were employed through the Works Progress Administration, a United States federal economic relief program.
Admission is $8 per person, plus the cost of your lunch at the institute.

Charlevoix Planning and Ski Trip Feb.22nd and 23rd

Do you like northern Michigan? Are you a skier or boarder? Would you like to get away from campus for a couple of days?

Larry Sullivan - Charlevoix County's Senior Planner, Mike Spencer- the Charlevoix City Planner, Keith Carey- the Director of the Downtown Development Authority will be hosting us for a day in the county and a night in the village. Take advantage of this terrific event! You only need approximately $200.00 for everything, if you plan to rent skis/board. We need 10 students to make this trip a go.... so pack up your gear and head out to the winter wonderland of our beautiful state!

Next week Feb. 11th- Feb.15th the department will be conducting interviews in search of a new faculty member. This is extremely exciting and important news. With the addition of a new professor, new classes and funding could be made more available to the department... Thus the future of the program(s) in the Geography Department will be more successful. The Department will secure the accreditation, increase our student enrollment and raise the bar in our education. Our program is growing and becoming a source of pride for EMU with the University's approval of another faculty member. HOWEVER your help is needed in order to do this!

Model D Speaker Series: Who Sells Detroit?

The next Model D speaker series event will look at the residential real estate market in Detroit — topics include who's buying, what they're looking for, what keeps the Realtors invested in the Detroit market and an overview of the state of the market.

The event will be at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12 on the 32nd floor of the Guardian Building in downtown Detroit.

Sign up today — it's free but seating is limited and you must RSVP.

The event starts with registration at 4:30 p.m. The hour-long program starts at 5 p.m., with networking and light refreshments to follow.

Dave Blaszkiewicz, president of the Detroit Investment Fund, will give a presentation on who's moving to Detroit and what are the residential real estate opportunities. The $52 million Detroit Investment Fund is a private-capital fund that offers financing for businesses and real estate projects that can stimulate economic development in Detroit.

Afterward, a panel of Realtors who sell in Detroit will discuss their experiences and take questions from the audience.

Panelists include:

• Austin Black II of Max Broock Realtors — Austin is a Detroit residential specialists working with buyers and sellers in the greater downtown loft and condo market. Austin also works with developers in marketing and selling their properties.

• Ryan Cooley of Corktown-based O'Connor Real Estate and Development — O'Connor is a Detroit-based boutique real estate and development office that specializes in residential and commercial sales, with an emphasis on technology and service. All our realtors live and work in Detroit neighborhoods, and the office embraces new technology as a way to help our clients effectively market their properties.

• Joy Santiago of Ralph Roberts Realty — Joy specializes in "Different Dwellings," including many unique condos and homes in Detroit. She has been selling real estate since 1998, and her clients have included some of Detroit's finest DJs, including Derrick May, Mike Grant and Stacey Pullen.

• Elizabeth Tintinalli of Real Estate One — Elizabeth is a Detroit-based real estate agent who started Illuminate Detroit, an annual event that combines art, music and culture, as well as highlighting real estate developments.

Adam Cook, the new PLACE Journal Editor writes a letter to students

Greetings to all Planning students and members of PLACE! I hope you
have had a restful Winter Break and are looking forward to the coming
semester. As students in the Planning program at EMU, one of the best
ways we can "get our names out there"--both as individuals looking for
future jobs AND as a Department--is by getting our work published.
Having research or essays cited in a professional or academic
publication can easily become a highlight of a resume or C.V.
The Planning Department has in previous years published such a
Journal--the Journal of PLACE--and we are looking to publish the Journal
at regular intervals throughout 2008. Our goal is to put out an academic
journal that highlights the diverse interests and talents of the
students in EMU's Urban and Regional Planning programs. We want the
Journal to be a publication of high academic quality, but the content
will be largely determined by those who contribute to it.

Contributing does not have to involve taking on a whole bunch of
additional work. Here are some ideas:
--Is there a research paper you've written for a previous class? (Of
course there is!) Why not submit it?
--Have you read a great book relating to planning, land use, or
anything else that would be of interest to fellow students or
professors? Write a quick review.
--Do you work for an organization that is doing exciting things in
planning, land use, or preservation? Let us know what you're involved
in, and what opportunities may be out there for future graduates.
--Do you have a strong opinion on a current issue relating to
planning, on the local, regional or national level? Write an editorial
and let your voice be heard.

As editor, my job will be to compile your work into a publishable
form, so you don't have to worry about minor details. In creating a
great Journal, we can become published authors while putting EMU's
Planning Department on the map (pun intended) when our work is read at
other universities and professional organizations. We can also
strengthen our community of students and professors by making each other
aware of our interests and talents. Who knows? Maybe that person you sit
next to in class likes form based codes as much as you do!

We had a great turn out for last night's Basic Training Course! You presented some very smart questions and discussion. I don't know about you... but I was proud of our group and the many talented folks in our program. John Enos is a very busy, knowledgeable, well respected planner, yet he found time to help future EMU Planners and Public administrators with a very thorough and educational presentation, just for us. I would like to leave knowing PLACE will continue to be a strong club... involved with the university community but also with the larger community as well. So, I ask you to please consider taking a role in the club or becoming apart of its future this semester... before the summer wisks us away. Working within the club during this Michigan economy can only help you that much more in securing employment, learning as much as you can about planning and making important relationships in and outside of school. This brings me to tell you that we are still in the process of securing our next years PLACE officers. We have had A LOT of interest and several commitments already (4 to be exact). I look forward to announcing who the new 08/09 officers will be...at the next PLACE Meeting February 7th. Please try to attend this next meeting.

On Monday, January 14, Consumers Energy is hosting a presentation on a unique entrepreneurial approach for economic development from a unique venue. Following are details on the Venue, the Entrepreneurial Approach and the specifics of the Event.

The Venue: Imagine an 1880’s era state prison with cell blocks converted to apartments and galleries and individual cells used as studios for artists and musicians. The Armory Arts Village (the original Jackson State Prison converted to an armory in the 1930’s) features 250,000 sqft. of historic prison buildings and a stunning 25 ft. high turreted stone wall forming the perimeter of its 19 acre site.

The Entrepreneurial Approach: Ernesto Sirolli pioneered Enterprise Facilitation®, a unique economic development approach based on helping local citizens realize their passion and skills for an entrepreneurial venture. After developing the concept in Western Australia, Sirolli brought this person-centered approach to the United States. The first U.S.-based program, started in a rural Minnesota community in the early 1990’s, has accounted for the creation or expansion of 250 small enterprises and nearly 750 jobs… all in a county with a population of 6,500. Results have been similar in many other communities where entrepreneurs are not only being created, but their survival rates have far exceeded what would otherwise be expected.

The Event:
- When: Monday, January 14, two presentations, 2:00PM or 6:00PM (presentation is about one hour)
- Where: Armory Arts Village, 100 Armory Ct., Jackson, Michigan (can be located via MapQuest)
- Cost: There is no cost for this event

BELOW are important details, you might want to bring along... Hope to see you there!

1. Program Length - The session will include brief introductory remarks, Ernesto Sirolli's speech on Enterprise Facilitation and perhaps some brief Q&A. The session starts at 6:00 and will last up to perhaps 7:30. Ernesto Sirolli and other representatives from the Sirolli Institute will remain and be available for further questions and discussions.

2. Parking - Now, hopefully you can work with us on this. Due to the recent snow melt and rain and forecasts for more precipitation over the next few days, the unpaved auxiliary parking at the Armory Arts Village we had planned to use will be too muddy. We will be using a "park and shuttle" system from a parking lot about two blocks away.

Please go to the Nixon Park parking lot at 400 E. North St. (NE corner of Cooper and North St.) (address is recognized by MapQuest and GPS systems). Also, here are some easy directions from I-94. Take Exit 139 (Cooper St.) off I-94, go just less than a mile South to the 1st light (North St.) turn left and then left again immediately into the parking lot of Nixon Park. Look for Shuttle Bus sign.

A bus will make a continuous loop the two blocks to the Armory Arts Village (about every five minutes) beginning at about 5:15 and again after the program until all people have been shuttled back to the Lot. The drop off will be right at the entry to the Armory Arts Village. Using this park and shuttle arrangement is much more convenient both to and from the event.

3. Copies of Ernesto Sirolli's book - Nomad Bookstore, a local bookstore has agreed to handle copies of Ernesto Sirolli's book, Ripples from the Zambezi: Passion, Entrepreneurship and the Rebirth of Local Economies, and Ernesto will be available to sign copies. They will be available for sale at $15.00 with tax included. Because credit cards purchases will be more complex (due to no internet connection in the presentation room), cash purchases are preferred. Nomad will also accept personal checks. This local entrepreneur is taking on the risk of having books available, so consider purchasing a copy.

4. Tours of the Armory Arts Village - Much of the Armory Arts Village can be seen on a "self-guided" tour. Seeing apartments and getting information on the village will involve staff who will be available. Some tours may precede the presentation. Other options for tours will be announced from the podium.

5. Other Attractions - If you arrive early or linger afterwords, visit the adjoining ART 634 Building which was the genesis of the Armory Arts Village. There you will find Real Goods, an organic foods store (check their offerings and menus at http://www.realgoodsorganics.com).

"I actually located at least one of the computers in the library with
ArcGIS on it. It is PC#5 (which is in front of the color printing
desk). The trick is that there is no icon for it. You have to do a
search for it. I'm sure thats why no one could ever find it before. I

The Michigan Association of Planning is seeking planning students/recent graduates to make a 15-20 minute presentation at the 2008 MAP Student Conference (to be held Feb. 8, 2008).

The student conference committee will be selecting sessions in the middle of December.

This Friday November 30th, we are having our second and last Field Trip of the semester. We will be meeting up in the lobby at the Mallet Creek Library in Ann Arbor @ 12 noon, for a one hour tour of this sustainable "green" building. Afterwards, we will be having lunch at Amer's Deli in downtown A2 from 1:45-2:45. From the restaurant.... we will proceed to the Carlisle and Wortman Consulting office for a 3PM presentation and tour. John Enos (EMU Planning Alum) will be talking with us about how the professional planning world works and how students can prepare themselves.

The City of Ypsilanti will be holding 2 design charettes TOMORROW,
Thursday, November 8. Meetings will be held at 3pm and 6pm.

I have tried to find more information about these meetings on the
city's website, but have not been able to.

Professor Jones told us about them at the last PLACE meeting and
I'm sure there's a pretty good chance that they are being held in
the city building downtown. Again the times for the meetings are
3pm or 6pm.

1) Jenny discussed the upcoming field trips that she and Aaron had set up. (see details about these in the post below).

2) The group set a date for the upcoming holiday party. We decided on Saturday, December 8. Professor Jones offered to host it at his home.

3) Professor Jones announced that Ypsilanti would be having design charette on
Thursday, November 8. There will be two meetings held: one at 3pm and one at 6pm. These charettes will address the future of Frog Island Park and the Riverside area.

4) The group discussed the possibility of traveling to the national APA conference in Las Vegas in the spring of 2008.

FIELD TRIPS!

Hi All,

If you don't already know.... EMU's URP and GIS students have been invited, by theTownship Manager Dale Reaume, to tour Grosse Isle Island! He is an EMU Alum and a planner! He will provide us an educational and fun tour on Friday Nov. 9th!

We will meet just outside the Strong Hall Studio Room doors @ 12noon and will leave campus by way of " ride sharing " @ 12:30. We will drive along the Detroit River Front through Wyandotte and arrive at the Grosse Isle Island Township Hall by 3pm. While on the island we will learn about the airport, harbor, open space, housing and other planning related aspects. After the tour, we plan to have dinner (on the island ) at a nice but rather inexpensive restaurant. We should be leaving the island around 7pmish, arriving back in Ypsilanti by 8:30pm.

Consider the immense value in this field trip and Dale's generous offer. Get to know fellow classmates in your program and have a really fun break from the typical class room setting!

So mark your calendars, TELL YOUR FRIENDS and CLASSMATES and let me know if you will be attending...

The other field trip is a little more local. We will pay a visit to Carlisle Wortman Friday Nov. 30th in Ann Arbor. Aaron Flohr is working on trying to get us a combined tour at the Mallet Ann Arbor Library ( a sustainable green building) for the 30th before we go to C.W.

Several months ago I had the great pleasure of hearing Paul Schutt, publisher of Model D Media, speak at a conference put on by the Michigan Suburbs Alliance. Paul's talk centered on the importance of changing the paradigm through which the media views a city like Detroit. While there was plenty of bad to focus on, Model D left the "if it bleeds it leads" mindset behind, in order to focus on the good that was happening in the city. As it turns out they found plenty of good there, and in cities like Pittsburgh, Grand Rapids and Lansing.

What happened at the Oct.4th party/meeting?

We began the meeting with some light discussion about how to expand and grow the URP and GIS programs. There were suggestions from Ian, Greg, Joe, Kevin, Erik, and others about how we can reach out to communities, high schools and the freshman/sophmore here at EMU. We talked about the brochure that is currently being used for marketing the program and discussed some ways to distribute it. Next, we moved onto the topic of some potential off campus events and/or tours that the club could partake in..... Aaron Flohr is heading this up. We brainstormed some ideas... Michigan Ave, Canton.... Cherry Creek, Midtown Detroit, Howell's New Urbanism town and we included tours of historic structures. Joe has offered to speak with a friend that is involved in "green building" about making a visit to one of our club meetings for an informal educating session.

Aaron is looking for more ideas and some contacts for tours. Please let him know if you have connections with new or old developments that may interest the club as a tour. His email is aflohr@emich.edu.

After the meeting part, we gathered around the drafting tables and created some sculptures for the studio room. We used foam core, fabric, cardboard cylinders and other nifty junk. We also worked on a "My Favorite PLACE "banner that is now located on the green wall. We encourage you to add YOUR favorite place to ours..... we'd like to display it in a better location so that those in the halls can see what we are up to.. and what urban planning is about.

We have a bake sale coming up this Wednesday, October 10th. All baked goods should be dropped off at Dr. Jones's office by Tuesday Oct.9th evening.... and we need all the baked goods we can get, as well as some help that day! Please consider 30min. to an hour of your time. We could use the money for a variety of fun activities! Contact Kristen... khatfield@gmail.com if you need more info or have some suggestions.

Our NEXT MEETING will be Thursday November 1st... all of our meetings are on the 1st Thursday of the month.

Dymaxion House Installation at the Henry Ford

The Dymaxion House was developed by inventor Buckminster Fuller to address several failures he perceived with existing homebuilding techniques. Fuller designed several different versions of the house at different times, but they were factory manufactured kits, assembled on site, intended to be suitable for any site or environment and to use resources efficiently. One important design consideration was ease of shipment and assembly.

This house has been reassembled inside of the Henry Ford Museum and it is fascinating. Check it out in person if you get a chance, or see it on the museum's website.

1st Fundraiser of the Year

Our first fundraiser of the year will be a bake sale...

It will take place on Wednesday, October 10

We are still determining the times for the sale, we'll keep you
posted and have more information at the next PLACE meeting
on Thursday, October 4. If you're interested in picking up a
shift or contributing some baked goods, send Kristen an

This will be a great opportunity to get to know some of your
classmates and let some people about the planning program.

Hi everyone,

Welcome to EMU and to a new semester. All of PLACE members are excited to get the club up and running again. We held an orientation for new students in mid-September and got a chance to meet some of you and give you an idea of who we are and what we're trying to accomplish.

Essentially, we feel that school - be it graduate or undergraduate is what you make of it. However many years it takes you to complete your education, at some point you'll be finished and on your way. While you're here why not get as much out of it as possible?

We hope (with your help) to offer a range of opportunities for professional, educational and social growth. When it's all said and done, what you learn in school is important but who you know can sometimes be just as important. Take these opportunities (and create your own) to network with your fellow students and professionals working in the field.

To wrap up, these are some of the main projects that the core PLACE group is working on:

1) Increasing the program's outreach efforts to recruit new students and increase the size of the program
2) Raising funds to supplement and increase the club's scholarship fund
3) Foster networking with each other, alumni and the planning community

These are general goals, with specific activities that need to happen to accomplish them. These activites include: registering PLACE as an official club with the university, starting up the PLACE Journal again, organizing fundraisers, regularly updating the blog and keeping members informed through emails and the web, continuing the Mentoring Program that was started last year, planning field trips and hosting guest speakers and starting an Alumni Association specific to the program.

There is obviously a limit to what a few people can do. If any of these activities sound interesting to you and like something that you would like to either organize or support, please contact any of us and we will be more than happy to work with you. We would really like for this club to be a success.

PLACE Meetings

PLACE meetings will be the 1st Thursday of the month and will run from 4:30 - 5:20 in the Planning Studio.
